SarahGray Lamm ~ Chapel Hill / Carrboro / Durham Real Estate Blog ~ Agent Outlier: Our Clients Are NOT Leads

Our Clients Are NOT Leads

This video says it ALL…about how our clients feel about us and what they value about our services. I cannot tell you how strongly this speaks to me. I am fortunate to have a business made up of about 99% referral business and I have yet to have a former client or friend (many of whom are one and the same) ask me if I would like a “lead.” They call and ask me if I can help a friend, family member or co-worker of theirs with a real estate question or purchase. The answer is always YES!

Sometimes the transaction is easy – peezy and sometimes it is slow and requires hard, hard work (not because of the client but just because real estate can be that way.) Sometimes it’s a telephone conversation that results in nothing more than a heartfelt “thank you!” Other times it becomes a long, mutually beneficial relationship.

No matter what the result of the interaction, I always know I have helped my client or friend look good by sharing my knowledge at their recommendation. And THAT, my friends, is worth my time and is how I built my business.

* Thanks to Jeff Castner for posting the link to 1000Watt Consulting that got me to this video. I've seen their stuff before but managed to miss this one and am happy to find it now. I'm choosing not to reblog because I wanted to focus on something different than Jeff chose to focus on in his post. Needless to say, the video can speak to us on many levels!

what is so funny, I used to work in a hospital...(in patient rehab) and they used to refer to our case loads as..hey you have "the back" in room 110 or "the foot" in room 107... I always thought that was a little impersonal.

That seems to be the nature of the game anymore..it is all about me...I want to see it all and I want to see if now..

I am paying you for information not your time....wow ....really an enticement for new people to get into the industry.  I look at real estate on a personal level ....a business relationship...a meeting of the minds..not a one way

" meet my demands and bug off " information machine.

BTW I am not paying you for your time....we can all agree to that..obviously their job consist of a payroll paycheck every week not a hard earned,  running your tail off, jumping through hoops commission check.

I establish a relationship with my clients.  We work together to meet their needs.  I have the responsibility as a Realtor to provide them with the best service they could possibly get.  They deserve that commitment.  They deserve my respect

and I deserve to be respected.  I am sure this video was made to drive home the point that today's consumer has changed.  I appreciate that it has but the really sad thing is that there are actually people that have a low opinion of Realtors and think we are so desperate that we will put up with attitude and disrespect.  I feel Realtors are a smart bunch. As a collective group we will work our buns off to provide service to our clients...but you know what...we are smart enough to know  what customer  we want to work with.....No disrespect or attitude allowed.

..when people know you are in real estate, and they see you the topic and conversation and questions always turn to real estate...why not help and offer information ?  If we can provide that service than we are doing a service not only for our business, our industry and the important sharing our expertise to help others..why not it is what we do.

Hi Sarah  As if I haven't said enough but if you do a great job doesn't that client's friend  or family member deserve an Agent that has worked so deligently with them...It doesn't make sense...as if they are saying "  Boy I have this fantastic Realtor,  the best you could find, we would not use anyone else....but..I am not telling you who it is, because I am not a lead.........go find your own  this is  an interesting video and concept  thanks for sharing and letting me go on and on

Konnie - Great example! Hard to be personally involved with "a back" or "a lead"...my folks are well, folks!

Wow June! Actually what they said was 'I am paying you for your knowledge and experience not your time.' 'Information' changes the whole message. I believe my knowledge and experience is exactly what they SHOULD be paying me for...NOT my time. Knowledge and experience are rarely treated with disrespect.

Hi Sarah  Sorry for the rant and I did hear that wrong ..it sure does put a  important different spin on the message.  I agree it is our expertise that is of value not our time...although I am not a happy camper about wasting my time either.  The message caught me wrong since it was filled with ( what I thought was attitude ) thanks for clearing that up.  Yep we pride ourselves as being Professional with Knowledge and Experience..that is what they want...that is what our responsibility is to deliver. Good point

Not to worry, June. I understand the comment about 'attitude' but I think the video was a intended as a 'cut to the chase' lesson for agents who think "branding" themselves is all it takes. It's no longer about gimmicks or just being in the room. Those of us, like you and me, with years of experience and knowledge, are well positioned for this market if we just put it out there! A waste of time for me is driving around an unqualified buyer or doing CMAs for folks who are only looking for the highest price from an agent. I've never considered educating the public to be a waste of my time and more often than not it ends up bringing me business down the road if not immediately! I truly appreciate your sharing your thoughts and engaging with me on this!
